Seto Surya: A Movie Defining Nepali Cinema

Rauniyar has done a fantastic job maintaining detailed and intimate drama revolving around human with sharply observed political delicacy. This film is a landmark in Nepali film industry. It very beautifully encapsulates the post-war scenario in the Maoist Rebellion period in Nepal.

Satirizing the traditions and beliefs where the old are set against the new, “White Sun” observes the dilemma of well-rounded characters and their baggage with each other through death and change. It also observes the guilt, transformations, and freedom that something as stark as war can bring into some people’s life.

With a light touch and absurd comic situations, Rauniyar’s film slowly and assuredly becomes an important piece of cinema which gives every viewer in Nepal and around the world an opportunity to look into the world they live in or should know about.

Dayahang has given the performance of his lifetime, acting his hearts out. The movie is pictorially arresting, filled with delicate philosophical matters, emotional intelligence, and eye-rolling humor.

The story sheds a light on the conflict, tension and the real-life scenario of the hills during the Maoist guerilla war period in the country. Although the movie showcases chaos and war drama revolving all around, it doesn't fail to demonstrate the beauty of the region.

The adult bitterness, conflicts, confusion, polar ideas of the right and wrong, and what not that humans depict, and the impressions these things have on the ideologies and mentality of young ones around them are delivered in a very subtle way with non-stressing visual metaphors.

The main character, Chandra's (Dayahang Rai) exasperation with discriminatory customs he fights against only further complicates matters,  unforgiving and steep mountain passages are used as physical metaphors by Rauniyar for the difficult path of a young blood and old ideologies' attempt to establish communism and dethrone the monarch.
